either a liquid or alkaline material which absorbs the unwanted pollutants and releases cleaner air.

Bio filtration is often used to remove VOC’s, this is where the gases being released are first passed through a bed of micro organisms which degrade the VOC’s before emitting the air.

Catalytic converters added to internal combustion engines can convert harmful gases into less harmful non toxic substances ready for release into the atmosphere. These have been used since 1981 and can reduce Nitrogen oxide, Carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons.

Electrostatic precipitators are also a form of gas filtration, allowing particulates to be filtered from flue gases. They use an induced electrostatic charge to attract ions carried in the gas before it is emitted.

On a more local level people are being encouraged to recycle through their local councils offering a recycling collection service. This will eventually reduce industrial processes to release metal ores, and many other environmentally harmful processes. In some places, incentives are offered to use public transport or walk instead of travelling by car, this will cut emissions of NOx, particulates and all other pollutants released from exhaust gases.

If air pollution is not taken seriously then it will continue to be a growing problem and hinder future generations. World leaders are currently assessing the problems and encouraging us to do the same. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
