Present day pressures often feature as a difficulty in responding fully and appropriately to these teachings, both within a relationship or family, and further into one’s Christian community. Like trying to follow many other Christian teachings in a contemporary time, fulfilling a pledge of Marriage can be very hard to do, especially due to its important status in the Church; “God himself is the author of marriage”.
Marriage is based partially on one’s understanding and knowledge of his/her partner. The love shared between the pair must be sincere, and returned. To be able to fully comprehend what a partner’s personality, strengths, weaknesses, etc. are, is to prove that the feelings and time invested in this person are of a genuine nature and are not a mere pigment of infatuation. Lust is often mistaken for love these days, and so can sometimes lead to a falsified and short term commitment to a person; an act of impulsion which does not correspond with what is expected of a couple undergoing the sacrament of marriage. Instead, couples are expected to heavily prepare themselves for matrimony, as “preparation for marriage is of prime importance”. Groups such as ACCORD offer pre-marital courses to aid couples in readying themselves for this eternal commitment, as well as helping newlyweds with counselling, sex therapy, workshops and overall support. Pre-marital courses like the one offered by ACCORD give couples an insight on married life, and a realistic introduction to what will be expected of them as husband and wife, as well as reinforcing the main requirements of marriage (e.g. fidelity, permanence, etc.). Problems are also faced in post-marriage situations – perhaps a couple feel like they are falling out of love, or are experiencing emotional/physical difficulties, adding a strain on a married pair. Groups like ACCORD and RELATE are available for advice and consultation, as well as a priest or family member.
Preparations for marriage can also be useful in developing traits and characteristics required in a marriage. Often people find it hard to be patient or fully understanding of their partner. This is considered perfectly human and normal – however, a couples’ love for one another is supposed to prove strong enough to encourage partners to work hard at these traits, and build on them. A degree of selflessness
