Another justification of this belief is the importance of teenage role models in today’s society. There are plenty of examples of Christians who try their best to lead a life according to the teachings of discipleship, who’s works and actions reflect on the lives of teenagers and, in some cases, help to install faith. These examples can stretch from celebrities speaking briefly about their faith to groups writing and performing music about their beliefs (for example, Lacey Mosley and Matt Davies). A more intense example, however, is found through the sacrificial actions we hear of other teenagers taking. Cassie Bernall is one of the best examples of this. Raised as a religious girl, Cassie went to school in Littleton, Colorado. April 20th was what should have been just another school day for Cassie – but turned out to be her fatal proclamation of faith. The school was in mass hysteria as two gunmen made their ways up through the school to the library, where Cassie was hiding beneath a desk. After gunning their way through a number of other students, the gunmen set their sights on Cassie, who was a well known devout Christian. They began to mock her and tease her, shouting profanities about her beliefs. In a final act of hatred towards her, leading gunman Eric Harris asked her “Do you believe in God?” Hesitantly, she answered “Yes”, and in a horrific frenzy, Harris blasted a bullet at Cassie’s face. Cassie, to this day, is recognized as a teenage Christian martyr.
It is hard to know whether one can truly be a good disciple in today’s society. Temptations and fears can often be played against one’s faith, often succeeding, but in my personal opinion, I do not see this as a demise of one’s Christain belief or following. I believe it is merely a weakness. I do not believe everyone is capable of true discipleship, but I do believe it is achievable in some cases.
