Many believe that it is impossible to true disciple of Jesus in the modern world. They support this with the argument that consumerism and materialism have taken rule over faith. While many claim to be committed to their calling as disciples, they are in fact victims to avarice, and so find it hard to fulfil their role as a good follower. We see an example of this, in Mark’s story of the Rich Young Man. He wanted to enter the Kingdom of God, but found he was unable to sacrifice her personal belongings and his riches. If this sort of greed is practiced despite one’s Christian ‘morals’, then they are contradicting their role as a disciple.
It is also argued that Christian ethics in this day and age are greatly out of step. The traditions of conservative ideals, for example, celibacy, are becoming more and more ‘outdated’. It has become much more acceptable today to have sex before marriage, and this new acceptance has been applied to a number of old Christian beliefs. Homosexuality seems to be less of an atrocity (though many issues still revolve around it), and abortion seems to be tolerable under fitting circumstances. Believing that these outdated ethics have become redundant today, suggests that the requirements to be a ‘true disciple’ are also obsolete, therefore making oneself a true follower is an unattainable goal.
On the other hand, many believe that is possible to be a true disciple today. Their arguments are supported by constant reference to those who dedicate their lives and hard work to helping others through their Christian beliefs. The likes of Nelson Mandela and Mother Theresa are examples of these modern day disciples. A religious girl, Mother Theresa became a nun at the age of 18. She was then sent to Calcutta to teach girls, but disgusted by the poverty and dearth she was surrounded by, she chose to avert her life to making a difference for the poor and unfortunate. She lived out her life aiding these people with rehab houses, orphanages for dying children, houses for the sick and soup kitchens. The Samaritans are another example of modern day disciples. The organization voluntarily devotes their time to lend emotional support to those who feel depressed, despairing and sometimes even suicidal. Offering
