When introduced t a Christian family, one is expected to work for others in selflessness, and is responsible for carrying out the Lord’s work. However it must be acknowledged that, although Christians are all familiar to the words of Mark’s gospel (in regards to discipleship), they may be affected differently by them. This will depend on their response to the teaching.
Christians can respond to their call in a number of ways; they could follow the example of Jesus and the apostles by spreading the Good News. At an infant baptism, the priest conduction the service will say, “receive the light of Christ… to be kept burning brightly… this child of yours… is to walk always as a child of the light. May he/she keep the flame of faith alive?”
This is a further call, proclaiming that one should draw influence from the teaching of discipleship, and should actively spread their faith. Today, those who try to be good disciples are honouring their baptism constantly by keeping the “flame of faith” alive. Of course, modern day pressures and temptations can sometimes get in the way of our commitments. For example, we believe in charity and selflessness, but instead of giving our money to those less fortunate than ourselves, we often find ourselves pouring our earnings into greed and excess gluttony. In this, we are contradicting our vocations as followers of Jesus, and are dishonouring ourselves as disciples.
Others respond to their call in occupation; some devote themselves to priesthood, giving them completely to God, spreading the word of the Lord, and teaching others how to be a good follower. Others commit themselves to religious orders (i.e. Monks). These people take three vows in their work; Poverty, Chastity and Obedience. These vows leave them totally dependant on God, through the charity of others in their parish. Through such occupation, these followers practice strong discipleship, as taught through Mark’s gospel.
It is sometimes accepted that true discipleship involves a sort of service. Many people are in need of serious help, and many groups today reach out to offer such help, promoting their faith.
Samaritans is a charity formed in 1953, and was established to aid those feeling lost; depressed, suicidal or alone. The name is derived from the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan (though the group is
