are successful in presenting the idea that their true love overcomes the evils of death and time. Where all three sonnets are concerned, a clear difference is easy to identify. This does not take from the fact however, that each effectively explores separate aspects of love from the personal points of view of each poet through their ‘poetic voices’. Thus I am able to conclude that the initial purpose of the sonnet did not alter in any major sense throughout the ages. It’s objective was always to discuss and consider the many sides to love through people, nature and other everyday things that featured in people’s lives, and this is a tradition that is was (and still continues to be) honoured.
