With heartless marketing methods such as those we endure today, is it really any wonder that 80% of 4th grade girls in America have committed to a fad diet?
In any democratic society, the allowance of free speech is essential. Why then, are the leading sources of public communication forced to conform to sets of rules and standards that limit what they will and can declare? Those in control of our primary resources are so afraid to challenge the conventions that they are issued and, as a result, we are left with little dependable information. For this reason, many people turn away from major media outlets such as Fox and traditional radio talk shows, and instead follow the broadcasts and reports from more independent mediums. Democracy Now! is a news-based programme aired on a vast number of television and radio stations throughout the United States of America. Its goal is to combat the insatiable principles of mainstream media outlets, and instead report honestly on topics of real variety and importance, delivering to its audience “perspectives rarely heard in the U.S. corporate-sponsored media, including independent and international journalists, ordinary people from around the world who are directly affected by U.S. foreign policy, grassroots leaders and peace activists, artists, academics and independent analysts”. Non-profit organisations like Democracy Now! are fast gaining popularity and support, and many others are beginning to spout as a result of this, a number of which have been established to target the uninformed youth of today. One leading example of such organisations by the youth, for the youth, is Detroit’s Underground Resistance (www.undergroundresistance.com).
This isn’t to say that the heavy influence of media is always used in a negative aspect. Obviously, mass media provides us with great sources of information and entertainment. Television stations such as the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon are useful tools for parents. They effectively pacify young children and often even hold a particular educational value. Even this though, is subject to debate. Is this really a good thing? Sitting one’s child down for some quality time with the television set seems somewhat… sinister. Perhaps if parents were more inclined to teach their children about the apparitions on T.V. and in the paper, as opposed to forcing
