She allows other characters to manipulate her in such a way that she contemplates the escape that death provides. One can then draw the conclusion that Tess experiences a psychological death before her physical death. This develops the traditional Victorian novel; instead of her hard work being recognised and her life made easier, she suffers immeasurably throughout.
